Adjustable Collar Guides

You only need ONE BAND to perform The Equalizer™ routines. You can adjust the resistance that best challenges your level of fitness by attaching the band as instructed and turning or twisting the band until the proper resistance level is reached. As you can see in the picture below, the collar guides are secured in place to accommodate most any band size and strength you will need. However, if you find you need to adjust them you can do so with the Allen wrench that came with your Equalizer™.

If the WDS slips around the EQ bar when using a band, make sure the band is wrapped around both the WDS and the BAR. If you need to create more WDS lever tension, you can do so with a standard Phillips-head screwdriver. Hold the EQ with your left hand and open the lever as shown. Use the screwdriver to turn the bolt towards you (yellow arrow.) You only need to turn the bolt slightly to create more locking tension. The WDS must be tight enough so as not to turn when you twist a band around the EQ when performing certain routines such as bicep curls. NOTE: The EQ arrives with the proper tension and may not need adjustment. SEE PAGE 7

Importance of Breath Control

Your body’s main source of energy is oxygen. Period. ~ Belisa Vranich

This is a reminder of the importance of breath control when exercising. The significance of the role that proper breathing plays when working out cannot be taken for granted. Nothing is more important than breathing…than doing so properly! Yet, how many of us pay attention to doing it correctly?

DO NOT HOLD YOUR BREATH WHEN EXERCISING! The gold standard during strength training is to inhale on relaxation and exhale during exertion.  We need regular oxygen to feed our muscles. You're probably taking big breaths in through your mouth to get more oxygen fast. But this decreases blood levels of carbon dioxide, inhibiting the body's ability to release oxygen into the cells. Not breathing during exertion can lead to hernias. It’s important to keep your breathing steady by timing it with your movement to ensure the muscles are adequately oxygenated to perform optimally.  Breathing into your diaphragm can help to increase the amount of oxygen you get each time you inhale. To breathe into your diaphragm instead of your chest, focus on expanding and contracting your belly as you breathe, rather than your chest. Ensuring you exhale out carbon dioxide during the effort prepares your lungs to inhale oxygen as your muscles relax. This helps to keep your blood pressure stable and increases endurance, so you can exercise for longer.

Proper breathing starts in the nose and then moves to the stomach as your diaphragm contracts, the belly expands, and your lungs fill with air. It is the most efficient way to breathe, as it pulls down on the lungs, creating negative pressure in the chest, resulting in air flowing into your lungs.

The next page will provide more information using Beginner and Advanced breathing techniques designed and guided by Wim Hof, also known as The Iceman, a nickname bestowed upon him for breaking a number of records related to cold exposure including: climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in shorts, running a half marathon above the Arctic Circle barefoot, and standing in a container while covered with ice cubes for more than 112 minutes.

The Equalizer™: Level the Playing Field™

With regular breath training your cardiovascular system undergoes remarkable adaptations over time, improving its ability to extract oxygen from the blood and deliver it to the working muscles and organs.

This results in Increased energy levels, increased resilience to stress, reduced anxiety and depression, increased endurance and working capacity of the human brain, increased immunity and resistance to respiratory tract infections, generalized improvements in metabolic health and body composition (fat loss, improved insulin sensitivity, improved blood lipids, etc.), improved athletic performance, and widespread anti-aging effects.

These breathing techniques are employed by elite athletes and military to heighten their performance and concentration while also being a powerful stress reliever. In fact, as you continue holding your breath again and again, the effects ripple beyond the cellular realm to the macro level. Your body sets in motion adaptations to trigger your lung capacity to expand, allowing for greater oxygen intake and exchange. Alterations occur at the delicate lung-blood interface, optimizing the transfer of lifegiving oxygen into your bloodstream.

Breathing Techniques

Each Routine Segment will have the following...

The next page contains two Wim Hof breathing techniques which can be performed separate from The Equalizer™ routines. You are not required to include them with every Equalizer™ workout. They are an 'added benefit' to your program to help you on your journey to optimal wellness!

The "Dress Tie" knot

When securing the band you will find it easier to 'wiggle' the band as you pull it through, especially with new bands that tend to be 'sticky' and have not be 'seasoned' (used for a while.) As you pull (tighten) the band with one hand,  turn the EQ bar in the opposite direction. In picture 3 below you would use your right hand to get the band 'snug to the bar'. Use the left hand on the bar to rotate downward, while pulling the band upward (tightening the knot) with your right hand. NOTE: Periodically, check  the knot to insure it remains snug and secure to both the EQ bar and the WDS.

CAUTION!

When tightening the band around the EQ bar take care not to 'overlap' the WDS latch where the band makes contact with the threads on the bolt that is used to adjust the lever. This is shown in "INCORRECT band positioning!" If you overlap the band where it makes contact with the sharp threads it will cut into the band and result in the likelihood of the band tearing or breaking prematurely.  The CORRECT method is shown below.
